The Maple Leafs organization is holding its collective breath tonight as they await an update on top prospect Easton Cowan.

Cowan, a forward for the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights, was shaken up on Friday night when he was rocked by a huge hit that came courtesy of Oshawa Generals defenseman Zackary Sandhu.

The injury occurred when Sandhu attempted to deliver a huge open ice hit on Cowan as the Maple Leafs prospect came up the middle of the ice, resulting in a massive collision between the two men. Although it looked like Sandhu was coming in for a clean hit, one that would have seen him drive through Cowan's body, both men appeared to bump heads during the contact which would explain the end result.

Both Cowan and Sandhu appeared to be shaken up on the play and blood could be seen on the ice after the collision, leaving questions about the status of both men moving forward.

Here is a look at the replay of the collision:

Unfortunately for both the Maple Leafs and Cowan the timing of this couldn't be any worse, especially if it proves to be any kind of significant injury. The World Junior Championship is right around the corner and Cowan was expected to kick off training camp with the rest of his Canadian teammates roughly a week from now. Any kind of serious injury here could seriously derail those plans, which in turn could have a significant impact on Cowan's development moving forward.

Stay tuned for more details.
