Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev has been knocked out of Saturday night's game against the New York Rangers after seemingly suffering an injury. Tanev was shaken up after he blocked a shot with the wrong part of his body, seemingly taking the puck to the side of his leg where there is very little padding to reduce the impact of the shot.

Tanev was wincing in pain immediately following the block, but more concerning than that was his reaction after that initial jolt of pain.

Although wincing in pain after a blocked shot is not uncommon, the concern for Tanev is that he appeared entirely unable to place any weight down on his right leg as he left the ice. Instead Tanev had to be helped off the ice by teammates Mitch Marner and Steve Lorentz.

Tanev did not return to the Maple Leafs bench and instead headed straight to the Maple Leafs locker room, but also needed help from members of the Maple Leafs training staff to get down the tunnel as well.

The incident happened near the end of the second period so it comes as no surprise that Tanev did not return to the bench after heading to the locker room, and there has been no official update on his status for what remains of the game as of yet.

Update: Tanev did not return to the bench to start the third period.

Update 2: Tanev is now back on the bench, the Maple Leafs appear to have avoided disaster.
