Korpisalo responds to questions following Swayman controversy.
The Bruins current number one goaltender, Joonas Korpisalo, faces questions after some dramatic moments on Monday morning.
The Boston Bruins created quite a bit of controversy on Monday morning, and unfortunately goaltender Joonas Korpisalo is having to deal with some of the fallout from that incident as he fields questions from reporters.
For those of you who missed my earlier reports on this topic, the Bruins sent their fan base into a frenzy this morning when both general manager Don Sweeney and head coach Jim Montgomery made comments indicating that star goaltender Jeremy Swayman would not begin the regular season with the Bruins. Those flames were then fanned by Bruins team president Cam Neely, who quite frankly appeared to attempt to turn fan sentiment against Swayman by publicly discussing the ongoing contract negotiations.
All of this has led to a belief that Korpisalo may be the Bruins starting netminder when the season officially gets underway, and Korpisalo was asked about exactly that.
"No one has told me anything yet," admitted Korpisalo. "Just take it day by day."
You could imagine that the uncertainty around how things will go could prove to be quite challenging for Korpisalo, but the veteran National Hockey League goaltender had a great response when asked about this very topic.
"It's normal," said a confident Korpisalo. "Things doesn't change if you play or not. You work your ass off every day to make yourself ready whenever a goalie is needed."
When asked if he feels ready to take on the task of a full time netminder for the Bruins, Korpisalo again showed great confidence.
"I feel good, I feel good," said Korpisalo. "I've played a lot of games before... so just keep being me and help the team to win."
While this entire situation is less than ideal from the perspective of Bruins fans, perhaps Korpisalo's confidence heading into the season will provide a silver lining.
