KHL player suffers gruesome injury after taking skate to the face.

KHL player Danil Mokrushev is on the receiving end of a gruesome injury after taking a skate to the face.

A game in the Kontinental Hockey League today has resulted in one player suffering a gruesome injury to his face after being struck by the skate blade of his opponent. Even more bizarrely, the whole incident began when another one of his teammates was injured after a shot struck him in the face.

Although the whole incident began with his teammate being struck in the head by an errant shot, it would be HC Sochi's Danil Mokrushev who would end up getting the worst of it as players all fell over one another in front of the net. Unfortunately for Mokrushev, as he fell his face collided with the skate of a CSKA Moscow player, slicing him across the bottom of his face and striking him in the teeth at the same time.

Here's a look at the replay courtesy of Hockey New Hub:

Thankfully Mokrushev was photographed in the locker room icing up his face after the incident and was able to give a thumbs up to show that he was alright, but that will do little to mitigate the damage that has been done to his face.

Mokrushev was also photographed after undergoing some repairs and you can clearly see that he has suffered a pretty gruesome injury, one that will very likely leave a scar on his face given the nature of the cut. He did get to show off a pretty solid hockey smile though, which I suppose can be viewed as a positive in this sport.
