The Justin Holl era with the Toronto Maple Leafs officially came to an end this past summer, as the unrestricted free agent defenseman decided to take his talents a short distance over the border and sign with the division and Original 6 rival Detroit Red Wings.

He was offered a three year contract with an AAV of $3.4 million by Detroit GM Steve Yzerman, which he quickly accepted. It brought an end a period of time with the Leafs that, while positive at times, was also mired with more than a few examples of being caught out of position and also posting not the best plus-minus statistics.

But as far as plus-minus is concerned, Holl has completely flipped the script so far in his brief time with the Red Wings. Through the first five games of the season, he leads the NHL with a +9 rating.

Holl had the following to say upon his signing in Detroit this summer:

“I’ve been used more defensively in years past and I think that’s probably where a lot of my value lies, but I think I can do things on both sides of the ice,” Holl said about what he can bring to the team. “Be a steady presence on the back end and help us win games.”

So far, so good for Holl and the Red Wings, who are an impressive 5-1 through six games played.
