It appears that there is still a market for Montreal Canadiens defenseman Joel Edmundson. At first, when the Tampa Bay traded Vladislav Namestnikov, it was believed it was to make room for Edmundson. However, to make it work with both clubs, the Habs would either need to retain 50% of Edmundson ‘s $3.5M cap hit, or the Canadiens would need to take back a contract.

It feels like the Bolts are out of the sweepstakes, but Pierre LeBrun reported on Insider Trading on TSN that another team might be pulling off a trade for Edmundson.

“One of the teams that, we believe, has talked to Montreal is the Calgary Flames. One of the things about the Flames is that they are in such a tough spot right now with where they are in the standings. I think this game tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs is gigantic for them, as they decide whether they want to add. But in terms of Joel Edmundson, he would fit their needs because he’s not a rental. The Flames are not in a position where they can spend big for a short-term solution.”

However, LeBrun isn’t sure Edmundson will move before the 3PMET deadline…

“He’s a player who may not get traded but he is still on the market. There are a couple of teams interested, I’m told, in Edmundson, who has another year on his contract. To some teams that can be scary because of some of the injuries he’s coming back from.”

Edmundson, who had not played since Jan. 26 against the Detroit Red Wings and was a game-time against the Los Angeles Kings last night, did return to action, but failed to record a point in a 3-2 loss. He has six points in 40 games for the Canadiens this season.
