Former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Jeff Petry was re-acquired by the Montreal Canadiens in yesterday's blockbuster 3-team trade that saw reigning Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson land with the Pens, while Petry found himself back with the Montreal Canadiens, for whom he played for several years before being traded to the Penguins prior to 2022-23.

However, if Petry thinks that he can simply re-adjust to life in Montreal, he likely shouldn't if this prediction from an NHL insider holds any weight.

Eric Engels of Sportsnet wrote the following on social media not long after the Karlsson trade was completed:

"I believe the Canadiens will trade Jeff Petry. Not necessarily immediately, but likely before the season starts. Pittsburgh has already paid Petry's $3M signing bonus for this season and MTL can retain 50% trading him out, making him $2.34M against the cap this season and next."

In his first and only season with the Penguins, Petry scored five goals with 26 assists. In 864 career NHL games, he's scored 92 goals with 261 assists.
