Jack Campbell breaks down in first AHL game
When you thought it couldn’t get worse…

Goalie Jack Campbell cleared waivers on Wednesday and was sent down to the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL in hopes that he would rack up some wins, make some spectacular saves and build his confidence.
Well, following his first game with the club on Thursday night, that plan is off to a rough start. Campbell was trending for all of the wrong reasons during the game against the Abbotsford Canucks, running the Oilers’ goalie, who allowed four goals on 20 shots and getting a convincing 4-1 win. The AHL Canucks beat Campbell three times in the second period to cruise to the victory and the poor goalie looked awful in his first AHL game since 2018.
Campbell is supposed to feel better about himself and get ready to be called back up by the Oilers whenever he can feel confident and back in control.
There was none of that last night. For a guy that commands a cap hit of $5 million and is under contract with a modified no trade clause until 2027, I would not have paid much to see him do this last night:
Many insiders believed that Oilers general manager Ken Holland told Campbell to improve his game with the Condors before he would be called back up to Edmonton.
And even if Holland was looking to shop him around instead, there is no way Campbell is attracting suitors with his hefty contract and, especially, embarrassing performances, not only in the NHL, but now also with the Condors…
The Canucks and Condors meet again on Saturday, and I’m not even sure I’d give Campbell the start and the chance to redeem himself…
