Insight behind Jake Walman trade revealed

It was a stunning move that not many saw coming, as the Detroit Red Wings traded defenseman Jake Walman to the San Jose Sharks earlier this afternoon in exchange for future considerations. 

The move was a surprise considering that he spent most of last season on Detroit's first defensive pairing with Moritz Seider, and also proved to have a valuable offensive touch. He was also just one season into a three-year contract that he agreed to prior to this most recent season.

The trade was met with confusion and sadness by many fans, who had grown fond of Walman. However, speculation began building that this could be a salary cap dump as a prelude to a major acquisition. Thanks to the move, the Red Wings freed up $3.4 million of space.
