There is a growing belief that a seismic shift will be coming to the Toronto Maple Leafs after a disappointing second round exit at the hands of the Florida Panthers in just 5 games. In spite of the seemingly universal agreement that changes will be coming to the Maple Leafs, no one seems certain about just what shape those changes will take.

On Saturday night, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman provided an update on arguably the most critical aspect of this offseason for the Maple Leafs, the future of general manager Kyle Dubas.

"I think the first thing they have to figure out is the future of general manager Kyle Dubas," revealed Friedman during Saturday night's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast.

With so many big decisions on the horizon the Leafs need to figure out who will be steering the ship, and Friedman shared his belief that he believes Dubas will remain at the helm.

"I will stress that this is my opinion and my opinion alone, but I would be surprised if there were not discussion already about bringing him back," revealed Friedman. "You have to recognize that you have to get there and you have to get there with terms that everyone is happy with... but my personal belief is that they have had discussions about bringing him back."

It sounds like the insider doesn't believe this will be a lengthy process either, with such an important offseason looming for the Maple Leafs.

"They have to get this done quickly because they have a lot of decisions to make up and down the roster and around the team.," said Friedman.

One of the reasons for this sense of urgency from the Leafs may be due to the fact that other teams around the league are driving up the price on Dubas with their interest in the Leafs' GM, and there are rumblings that this has allowed Dubas to make a power play in the Leafs front office.

Stay tuned.
