Hurricanes announce latest twist with Martin Necas

The latest update in the Necas saga!

Despite rampant speculation regarding the future of restricted free agent center Martin Necas with the Carolina Hurricanes, it now appears that he’ll actually be staying put rather than playing elsewhere next season.

According to Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky, he’s still attempting to get a  deal worked out with him now that other NHL clubs have less flexibility after the wave of free agency.

"It is a lot easier to make trades before July 1 when teams have flexibility to go pivot and sign other players to replace whatever they gave up than it is after July 1 when their roster is mostly built," Tulsky said, per NHL.com. "We are continuing to talk to teams, and we don't want to miss an opportunity to make the team better, but teams have less flexibility now than they had in June, so it's harder to find a deal now than it was then."

The Hurricanes now have plenty more cap space to work with after the contract termination of Evgeny Kuznetsov to get something worked out with Necas, who scored 24 goals and 29 assists last season.

He also has an arbitration hearing scheduled for later in the summer.
