Heartbreaking details revealed by Colby Cave's widow Emily

What a tragedy it was.

It's been just over five years now since former Edmonton Oilers forward Colby Cave tragically passed away after suffering a brain bleed, leaving behind a grieving family that included wife Emily Cave Boit.

In a recent interview with Yahoo, she explained more details behind her late husband's passing which included his cause of death was due to a rare tumor he was born with that was never detected.

"Colby had been born with a rare tumor that was never detected," Emily said. "Unfortunately, that day the tumour shifted. The neurosurgeon told me that with how big it was, he wouldn't have lived long with it. Even if they operated, he said it probably wouldn't have done anything."

"I was also frantic," Emily added. "I went through every little detail thinking, 'What did I miss?' It was the first thing I said when people called. I would say to Colby's teammates, 'Was he OK with you guys? What did I miss?' It was torture and I went through that for so long."

Thanks to COVID-19 regulations at the time, she and the rest of Cave's family weren't allowed to visit him in the hospital and were only able to correspond via walkie-talkie. His funeral was also delayed until May of the following year. According to Emily, Cave's Oilers teammates encouraged her to begin dating again, eventually culminating in a new marriage.

However, there will always be a special place in her hear for Colby, and she recently commemorated what would have been their five-year wedding anniversary late last month with a touching post on social media:

"Happy Heavenly 5th Wedding Anniversary, Colb," she captioned the post. "You recently came to me in a dream, as well as sent me many signs. You knew I needed them. To hear your laugh again, it gives me chills to think about it."
