Habs lose Toffoli and Edmundson long term.

More bad news for the Habs.

If you thought things couldn't possibly get worse for the Montreal Canadiens, guess again.

On Monday morning, Montreal Canadiens head coach Dominique Ducharme was the bearer of bad news. Ducharme began by revealing that both veteran forward Tyler Toffoli and veteran defenseman Joel Edmundson would be out for the foreseeable future. Ducharme expects that both men will be out for a few weeks, although he didn't go into much detail regarding just how many weeks that might be.

This is obviously very disappointing news, especially in the case of Edmundson who has seemingly dealt with nothing but setbacks this season. Edmundson has yet to play a single regular season game for the Habs and there were signs just a few weeks ago that he was getting closer to a return. Today's news is likely an indication that he has suffered a major setback in his recovery, obviously not good news for the Canadiens.

Update: Canadiens insider Eric Engels has confirmed there has been a major setback, adding that Edmundson now has to effectively start back at square one.

The Canadiens reported earlier today that Toffoli was being evaluated for an upper body injury, but it would appear based on this latest bit of information as though the initial prognosis was not great. Although he most recently played against the Kings, Toffoli was shaken up pretty bad during a game earlier this week when he was the victim of a dangerous looking hit from Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog. The hit was severe enough that it caused Toffoli to leave the game for a period of time, and it does make me wonder if that hit may have contributed to the injury Toffoli is now dealing with.

There were two other updates and although these were relatively minor they unfortunately also came in the form of bad news. Dominique Ducharme provided updates on both forward Joel Armia and defenseman Jeff Petry, stating that both players were doubtful for Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

When it rains it pours.
