On Wednesday night when the Montreal Canadiens kept their fifth overall selection and picked defenseman David Reinbacher with it, they stunned most of their own fans. Evidently, the selection did not pleased part of the fanbase, most of which who expected the Habs to get their hands of Russian phenomenon Matvei Michkov, who ended up with the Philadelphia Flyers.
When Reinbacher’s name was announced on the floor in Nashville, gasps and boos could be heard from the crowd. However, some fans went further in the most unacceptable way.
According to NHL Breakers, while Reinbacher had just learned he was a new member of the Canadiens and was celebrating a dream come true, he received thousands of hate messages from frustrated Canadiens fans, including some even comparing him to Hitler, seeing that the defenseman is Austrian.
This is just disgusting! I get that some fans can be disappointed with the Canadiens’ choice, but you cannot blame the kid who managed to impress the franchise and convince it to select him.
If you can handle it, this is the reaction caught live during the draft by some Canadiens’ fans.
The situation is getting so worrisome that The Athletic’s Arpon Basu reports that the Canadiens are strongly considering not bringing their new prospect to North America next season, in order to protect him from unnecessary pressure.
Reinbacher never asked to be harassed after making his dream come true! You really have to be an idiot to do such a thing and harass a poor kid. You better support him!
