Goalie helped off the ice after challenging the wrong man to a fight.
A goalie on goalie fight on Saturday night ended with one goaltender needing help getting off the ice.
Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for.
That was a lesson that goaltender Jake Barczewski of the ECHL's Utah Grizzlies learned the hard way on Saturday night when he bit off more than he could chew in the form of goaltender Victor Ostman of the ECHL's Kansas City Mavericks.
Things in the game had devolved into a bit of a brawl and it was at that moment that Barczewski believed he had an opportunity to get in on the action by skating to center ice and challenging Ostman to a goalie on goalie showdown. Unfortunately for Barczewski however, Ostman was not only more than willing to accept the challenge he was also very much ready to demolish his opponent at center ice.
Ostman would make very short work of Barczewski immediately clobbering his opponent with a huge right hand that nearly sent Barczewski to the promised land, before landing a few more punishing rights as Barczewski flailed and fell to the ice while effectively offering no offense of his own. This was a clear win for Ostman who may have put the other goaltenders in the ECHL on notice that he is not a man to be trifled with when it comes to throwing hands.
Making matters even worse for Barczewski is that he appeared to be shaken up as a result of the punches he absorbed from his opponent, needing help getting off the ice from both his teammates and one of the on ice officials. In fact the official appeared to quickly notice that all was not well with Barczewski, signaling to the Grizzlies bench that he was in need of assitance.
You can see the replay of the relatively short exchange between the two goalies in the short clip below:
This was just Barczewski's third appearance for the Grizzlies this season and his outings have not gone well thus far with Barczewsk recording a 5.10 goals against average and a .833 save percentage over that stretch. Meanwhile Ostman has been stellar between the pipes for the Mavericks with a 2.34 goals against average and a .911 save percentage over 15 games this season with Ostman holding down the fort again on Saturday night in more ways than one.
The Mavericks dominated this game against the Grizzlies, winning by a score of 10-3.
