Free agent P.K. Subban gets bad news

This doesn't bode well.

Michael W.

Hockey fans certainly won't soon forget that defenseman P.K. Subban was once known as one of the league's top players at his position. Not only did he win the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman in 2013, he was also a finalist for the award in 2018. He was also considered among the most exciting players on the ice.

But the enigmatic personality has fallen on hard times lately on the ice, seeing his stats fall off a cliff in recent years. He's coming off the massive eight-year, US$72-million contract he signed with the Montreal Canadiens in 2014 before a high profile deal in 2016 that sent him to the Nashville Predators for Shea Weber.

And while Subban has made it clear that he wants to play for a contender, nobody has come calling. In fact, he's not gotten any calls from non-contending teams, either. While speaking to Jeremy Filosa of the Cogeco Network, Subban's agent Don Meehan confirmed that his client hasn't garnered any interest on the free agent market.

He writes:

"Je viens d’échanger des messages avec l’agent de @PKSubban1, toujours à la recherche d’un contrat. Il n’y a eu aucun contact à son sujet avec le @CanadiensMTL"

Translated to English:

"I just exchanged messages with the agent of @PKSubban1, still looking for a contract. There has been no contact about him with the @CanadiensMTL"

Last season with the Devils, Subban scored five goals with 17 assists along with a -8 plus/minus rating. Over the course of his career spent with the Canadiens, Predators and Devils, he's scored 115 goals with 352 assists.

But if his playing days are at an end, he'll certainly have no shortage of opportunities for work off the ice given his big-time personality and fashion sense.
