Flyers' asking price for Senators cap dump revealed.
A National Hockey League insider has revealed how much it will cost the Senators to dump Mathieu Joseph's salary.
For some time now I have heard whispers of a trade brewing between the Ottawa Senators and the Philadelphia Flyers, one that would take the form of a salary cap dump involving Senators forward Mathieu Joseph.
Joseph currently has 3 years remaining on a deal that carries an average annual value and salary cap hit of $2.95 million per season, and freeing up that cap space would give the Senators the room they need to sign restricted free agent Shane Pinto who still does not have a new deal a week into training camp.
Deals of this nature usually come at a hefty cost for teams looking to dump salary and with so few teams able to provide the Senators a lifeline, the Flyers are looking to extract a very hefty price indeed. Rumors suggested that the Flyers were seeking a first round pick, or an equivalent prospect, but now I have more details regarding exactly what the Flyers want.
According to a report from The Fourth Period, the Flyers are demanding 20 year old forward Tyler Boucher as part of the deal, essentially asking the Senators to give up both Joseph and Boucher in return for nothing but the additional cap space such a move would provide.
Boucher was a first round pick (10th overall) for the Sens at the 2021 NHL Entry Draft so that would certainly line up with what I have been hearing over the course of the last week or so.
It's a tough sell to be sure but the Senators have no one to blame but themselves for putting themselves in such a difficult position, or more specifically no one to blame but general manager Pierre Dorion.
