Flames turned down 1st round pick for Tanev before trade to Dallas!
It was down to 4 teams and this is why Calgary pulled the trigger:

On Wednesday night, the Calgary Flames struck a deal with the Dallas Stars, while needing the help of the New Jersey Devils, to move defenseman Chris Tanev down to Texas. It was revealed on Thursday that four teams, including the Stars, were the four finalists to acquire Tanev and Pierre LeBrun revealed on Insider Trading on TSN that there three others were all Canadian teams.
“There was a lot of interest in Chris Tanev . Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto and Colorado were the four finalists that we know of other than the team that got him of course, the Dallas Stars . But it tells you that three Canadian teams who have Cup aspirations were in on Tanev which may also tell you what their next moves may be in terms of perhaps upgrading their blue-line.”
LeBrun went on to explain that one of those teams presented a first-round pick in an offer for Tanev, but were turned down by Calgary. We know it’s not the Maple Leafs since they do not have a first round pick. Instead, Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has reportedly attempted to acquire Tanev in exchange for multiple lower-round draft picks.
“You know, the Leafs had yet another conversation with Calgary on Wednesday, the day of the trade, but my understanding is Brad Treliving was still not willing to move that first-round pick in the Tanev deal and Calgary moves on with a Dallas deal and it’s a deal that Calgary really liked. You know they’ve been criticized for not getting a first in this deal. But they liked the prospect [Artem] Grushnikov, they see some Tanev-like attributes in him. And by the way, Calgary did have a first-round pick on the table in one of their trade offers. But it came with taking a player with term as part of the package and that wasn’t of interest to Calgary so you understand the package they ended up with, why it makes more sense for Calgary.”
LeBrun believes the Oilers might have been the ones to offer their first round pick, along with defenseman Cody Ceci, in attempts to acquire Tanev. As you know, he is now a Star.
The Flames’ attention now turns to defenseman Noah Hanifin, who is a pending unrestricted free agent that allegedly rejected a contract offer in Calgary.
With one week to go prior to trade deadline, there is a lot more than could happen in Calgary and the Flames could eventually get that first-round pick in a Hanifin trade.
