Goalies do sometimes blame themselves for a loss, however, Calgary Flames’ Jacob Markstrom took it up a notch on Thursday night, after the Montreal Canadiens got away with the 2-1 win.
“Well, I thought these guys did a great job and once again I’ve got to be better. I suck right now. So, I’ve got to step up and you know, we’re playing good hockey and not letting many scoring chances in, but we can’t start behind every game,” Markstrom said.
Calgary managed to outshoot the Canadiens 46-19, but recorded its fourth defeat in five outings. The Canadiens quickly beat Markstrom, 13 seconds into the game after the goalie misplayed the puck in front of his net. He was beat again in the third period by Cole Caufield, who ended up with the game-winning goal.
“I just suck at hockey right now,” Markstrom added.
He also commented on what he needs to do to be better and his modo is quite simple: “Work harder. Work harder, stop more pucks.”
The netminder is looking to get back to the success he had last season when he posted a 37-15-9 record with a .922 save percentage and a 2.22 GAA.
This season, he currently shows a record of 8-6-2 this season with a goals-against average of 2.97 and a save percentage of .889.
Flames’ fans shouldn’t worry, I say, seeing how adamant Markstrom is about playing better. He made that quite clear.
