The Detroit Red Wings are falling out of the playoff picture amid a six-game losing streak. Last night, they were left to dry in a 7-3 blowout loss to the Buffalo Sabres, allowing the New York Islanders to jump ahead of them in the standings.
Frustration has increased in Detroit, and on Wednesday, it reached a boiling point during practice. Teammates Ben Chiarot and Lucas Raymond got into at practice and had to be broken up during a drill. The footage was caught by Jeanna Trotman:
A six-game losing streak will do that to teammates. There has been a lot of anger in Hockey Town lately, especially with Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman electing to basically stand pat at the trade deadline last week, despite holding a playoff spot at the time. Fans had hope that additional help was coming for the ultimate push into the postseason.
There is little time left for the Red Wings to gain back some momentum and insert themselves in the playoff picture. On Thursday night, they face the Arizona Coyotes who defeated them 4-0 last week. Detroit has 17 games remaining in their season to try to end their playoff drought.
The clock is ticking, but some fans are seeing this outburst of anger and frustration as a good thing for the Red Wings.
They hope to see that spark and passion on the ice as soon as tomorrow when the Coyotes are in town, and especially when they will face the Islanders for the final time this year next Thursday in a matchup that could prove key in the playoff race.
