FBI gets involved in Evgeni Malkin’s burglary case as NHL warns other players!
They seem to believe these are targeted robberies and players need to be extra careful. Get the full details below:
After the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 4-2 loss at the hands of the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night, reports emerged that star forward Evgeni Malkin’s home had been burglarized and that his three Stanley Cup rings are missing. The Cup rings are from the Penguins’ 2009, 2016 and 2017 championship teams.
“Yes, 2 days ago,” Malkin said about the situation in a text message to The Athletic.
The report from The Athletic, which also reveals that no one was home at the time of the break-in, states that the robbery took place on Saturday and that the FBI is now involved in the investigation.
“The FBI is involved in the investigation, according to a team source with knowledge of the investigation who was granted anonymity because they are not permitted to speak publicly on the matter.”
The Penguins are working closely with authorities and so is the NHL as deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Wednesday in an email that the league “has been in touch with clubs” regarding recent targeted robberies of professional athletes.
The FBI reportedly sent a warning to different sports leagues, including the MLB and the NBA, regarding organized theft groups targeting athletes’ homes after reported break-ins at the homes of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr., Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis Jr., Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin and Dallas Mavericks point guard Luka Dončić.
This is a serious matter and definitely something that comes as a distraction for Malkin, who’d prefer to stay focused on the Penguins’ current struggles and fight for a playoff spot.
