It feels like forward Jesse Puljujärvi is leaving no other option to Edmonton Oilers’ general manager Ken Holland but to trade him ahead of the deadline. That’s what Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman expects to happen.

“There was a conversation at the beginning of the season between Puljujarvi and the team where it was decided that, if things didn’t go well, the Oilers would try to move him,” said Friedman. “I do think that’s going to happen, but I don’t know what the timeline is going to be. Edmonton is still banged up at forward and the Oilers don’t have a salary cap issue until Evander Kane comes back.”

Last week, Puljujarvi told reporter Tommi Seppälä that he isn’t sure if the National Hockey League is the place for him anymore. Holland attempted to trade Puljujarvi a few seasons ago when the young forward headed to Finland but he never got an offer. Following Puljujärvi’s comments on potentially playing elsewhere, the GM barely made a statement on what it could mean for the Oilers.

“I don’t really have a solution. That’s my response: It’s a hard league.”

You can only imagine that it sparked up trade chatter once again and it even revealed how Edmonton came close to moving the forward this summer.

According to Marco D’Amico of Montreal Hockey Now, the Canadiens kicked tires on Puljujarvi during the draft at the Bell Centre this summer, but instead went with Sean Monster of the Calgary Flames.

The Habs could always revisit their previous interest in Puljujarvi, who could be an attractive bottom-six option in Montreal.

The Oilers would probably have to include another asset in the deal following the young forward’s recent comments questioning his place in the NHL.

Seeing his performance this season, scoring a single goal in 30 games, we can see how the Canadiens’ decision to pass on Puljujarvi was justified.
