Evander Kane sounds off on future with the Edmonton Oilers

Will the Oilers bring him back?

Michael W.

Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland made the call earlier this season to bring aboard controversial forward Evander Kane, who certainly is a gifted athlete on the ice but has had plenty of issues away from the rink.

His personal troubles aside, Kane has proven to be a valuable commodity for the Oilers, having scored 22 goals with 17 assists in the 42 regular games he's suited up in since joining the team. And he continued his scoring into the postseason - to say the least.

Kane scored 13 goals in 15 games as the Oilers fought their way back from an opening-round series deficit against the Los Angeles Kings to advance into the highly anticipated 1st postseason Battle of Alberta since 1991. Kane and the Oilers would take down their provincial rival Calgary Flames in five games and land in the Western Conference Final for the first time since 2006.

However, they ran into what was simply a superior and stronger opponent in the Colorado Avalanche, who dispatched of the Oilers in a four-game sweep.

Now that they're officially in the offseason, how does does Kane feel about the season that was?

"A few months ago I had the opportunity to pick where I wanted to go," he said today. "Edmonton was interested in me and I was interested in them. We had some success. Moving forward there are many things that factor into the decision. I've really enjoyed my time here."

“This is got to be the best organization that I’ve played for.”

There's certainly a case to be made for the Oilers re-signing Kane given the immediate success he enjoyed once he was inserted into the lineup. Of course, Holland has been notorious in recent years for handing out lengthy contracts to players who later don't live up anywhere near to the term and salary they were handed.

However, you can't say that Kane wasn't been an important member of the Oilers in the second half of the 2021-22 campaign, and don't be surprised to see him back with a multi-year deal.
