We are less than a week away from the 2023 NHL Draft with no surprise coming when the Chicago Blackhawks go up to the podium to select Connor Bedard with the first overall pick. However, there is now chatter emerging that the Anaheim Ducks might pull a huge upset when they make the second overall selection.
However, according to Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek, the Ducks aren’t going to pick Adam Fantilli as every insider expects them to do. Marek explained on the 32 Thoughts podcast that a source has revealed that Anaheim plan on pulling an upset and choosing Russian prospect Matvei Michkov with the second overall pick.
It’s been hard to get an idea of what the 18-year-old plans on doing as scouts have recently reported that it’s been hard to get in touch with Michkov ahead of the draft. There have been reports that he has refused to meet with some clubs and that he has explicitly told them not to bother drafting him.
According to Bob McKenzie, Michkov will arrive in the United States shortly and will begin meeting with teams picking in the draft’s top 10. The Ducks might be tempted to make the bold move to select him second once they interview him.
Michkov has all the skill and talent to be considered a top 3 pick - which could explain why the Ducks want to pull off that controversial move.
This could have a huge impact on the following picks if ever Anaheim goes with Michkov and Fantilli remains available for the Columbus Blue Jackets with the third pick.
Can’t wait to see what happens!
