Drunk driving unfortunately does not only happen on the roads it seems, as news out of Gatineau near Ottawa emerged that its rules and consequences also apply to Zamboni drivers. On Monday evening, a man driving a resurfacing machine was arrested for being under the influence at the wheel after driving the Zamboni straight into the boards of a local arena. The arrest took place at the Meredith Center arena, located in Chelsea, near Gatineau.

Footage of the incident was made public by the local authorities and shows the driver wearing a hoodie over his head as he sits in command of the resurfacing machine.

An official can be seen talking to him and following him quite closely, though what he is saying to the impaired driver is inaudible. Though he is not driving at fast speed, it is clear that the drunk driver hits the boards as a dull noise is heard once he took the corner at low speed. He clearly has driven the machine in the boards.

Although the impact took place at low speed, authorities report that damage “to a door and to the boards” was reported, all “in the presence of several witnesses”.

The man, who was at the wheel of the large vehicle was under the influence of alcohol and therefore arrested on site by Public Security police officers from the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais.

His driver’s license has been suspended, but he was released while awaiting trial, which will come at a later date.

Thankfully, no one was injured during this event.
