Dean Evason explodes over knee on knee hit in final game of the season.
He is not happy.
Dean Evason is absolutely furious and I think most hockey fans are going to find it very easy to empathize with the understandably frustrated head coach of the Minnesota Wild.
On Friday night, the Wild took on the Colorado Avalanche in the final game of their regular season schedule and much to the Wild's credit they managed to secure a 4 - 1 victory over a team that many view as one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup this year. That win though may have come at a high price for the Wild with the team losing 30 year old veteran forward Marcus Foligno during the course of the game to what was a very questionable hit.
Foligno was injured when he was struck by a knee on knee hit courtesy of Colorado Avalanche defenseman Kurtis MacDermid and it was the kind of hit that you simply cannot deliver to an opponent. MacDermid attempted to deliver a hit through the body and Foligno attempted to avoid the contact, but with MacDermid's leg extended so far out the end result was a collision where both men went directly knee on knee with almost no body contact outside of that.
Here's a look at the replay for those of you who missed it:
Needless to say Evason had a lot to say about the hit following the game and seemed almost distraught when trying to explain his thoughts on the matter.
"What a terrible hit," said the Wild's head coach. "What a terrible, terrible hit. Not a hit. We don't know. Obviously, he's going to get really looked at tomorrow. Obviously doesn't play come back to play so it's serious enough that one of the toughest guys I've ever seen can't come back and play so there's no precaution. It's an awful thing to happen, especially this time [of the year]. Forget about any time. What's the point of it? What's the point?"
This could have major playoff implications for the Wild moving forward and with the playoffs now only a few short days away that gives Foligno very little time to recover.
