On Friday morning, The Athletic came out with an article that provided details on what has led the Calgary Flames to fire head coach Darryl Sutter at the end of the 2022-23 season. Katie Strang, Julian McKenzie and Hailey Salvian reported how the Flames launched an internal investigation into Sutter after he allegedly made physical contact with a player during a game.

While the article from Strang, McKenzie and Salvian should be read in full, you can find a summary here:

This took place in November during the Flames’ seven-game losing streak, about the same time when the players started to tune Sutter out. The investigation was completed and the player involved, who remains another, told the team that he did not want to see the matter escalated. The Flames and the player did not respond to comment.

However, Sutter denied the allegations, but declined to say anything more about his situation with the Flames.

“Pretty clear that everyone that knows me (knows) that none of that is true, disappointing to hear,”he wrote in a text message.

He added: “Flames are good hockey club, missed playoffs by couple points, finished 11 games over .500 in tough division that won Stanley Cup.”

More will come out on this crazy story, it’s almost certain. Stay tuned.
