Darren Dreger: “Multiple” NHL teams interested in Habs D Jeff Petry

The veteran Habs defenseman has struggled this season.

Needless to say, it hasn't been a very good season for Montreal Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry.

Not only is he on pace for his worst personal stat line since 2014-15 when he was traded from the Edmonton Oilers to the Habs, he also understandably faced heavy criticism for his complete inaction when his goaltender was steamrolled by Oilers forward Zach Kassian during a recent game.

However, that hasn't stopped multiple NHL teams from expressing interest in acquiring his services at the upcoming NHL Trade Deadline, according to NHL Insider Darren Dreger.

While speaking on TSN 690 earlier today, Dreger explained that there are several clubs interested in trading for Petry from the floundering Habs:

Among the teams that have been reported to be interested in Petry is the Dallas Stars, who remain in a bit of a standoff with blue liner John Klingberg, who has requested a trade out of Texas due to what he feels is a lack of appreciation.

Additionally, the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators and the Florida Panthers have also been linked to Petry.

Of course, teams could certainly be a bit leery considering his cap hit $6.25 million that runs all the way until Petry is 37 years of age. Naturally, a defenseman with cratering stats with that kind of cap hit would be enough to give potential suitors some serious pause.

Regardless of what happens with Petry, the Habs and new general manager Kent Hughes will almost certainly be busy selling at the deadline in order to acquire future assets in the form of draft capital.
