Earlier today, Montreal Canadiens defenseman Kaiden Guhle was called in for a hearing by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety because of his slashing Philadelphia’s Travis Konecny.
Later on Friday, it was announced that Guhle is suspended one game for his actions.
The incident took place during the second period, when Guhle tapped Konecny with his stick while the Montreal defenseman was seated on his bench. After the game, Konecny’s teammate Garnet Hathaway called out Guhle and the Canadiens in his post-game comments for a dirty play that was uncalled by the referees.
Several fans on social media were expecting a much longer suspension for Guhle. However, the young blue liner had a clean record before today and so was not dealt with the same severity served to a repeat offender. Some fans were even expecting just a fine, but the Flyers and their fanbase were pleading for more and got some hope when the hearing was announced.
I guess no one can be fully happy with this somewhat controversial verdict…
This will be an important lesson for Guhle, who has become an important part of the Habs’ future at the blue line. So far in his short career in Montreal, the 22-year-old has recorded 39 points in 110 contests.
