Tonight, the Detroit Red Wings host the Washington Capitals in what will be arguably the biggest game of the season. Right now, the Capitals trail the Red Wings by a single point for the final Wild Card playoff berth in the Eastern Conference; the Red Wings will follow up tonight with another major game on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Penguins, who tied them in the standings last night with a point against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
However, the Red Wings released a concerned health update on one of their top players earlier today. Defenseman Moritz Seider awoke feeling under the weather, and appeared to be the latest Red Wings player to land on the shelf with the illness that made its way through the dressing room.
However, there's a bit of optimism. According to head coach Derek Lalonde, Seider is expected to be able to try and give it a go for tonight's crucial game.
Seider had a particularly strong game in Detroit's last outing Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres, blocking 10 total shots. By comparison, the Sabres as a team blocked nine shots.
2023-24 is Seider's 3rd NHL campaign, and he's scored eight goals to go with 32 assists but paired with a -8 rating. Like Lucas Raymond, he's in the final year of his current contract, and is expected to be re-signed to a hefty contract extension over the summer by GM Steve Yzerman, who drafted them both.
