On the opening of free agency on Wednesday, star forward Johnny Gaudreau shocked fans across the NHL by foregoing expectations and signing a seven-year, $68.25-million deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Not only did the team he chose surprising - Gaudreau wanted to move closer to his home in Jersey but ended up with a franchise that is more than 500 miles away from home - he also agree to a lot less money that was on the table.

Not only did the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders offered more, it was known before the deal with Columbus was put together that the Calgary Flames offered Gaudreau an eight year contract which would make him the highest paid player in franchise history. Pierre LeBrun confirmed that the Flames’ offer was “was 8 years x $10.5 M AAV.

The fanbase in Calgary is furious and still attempts to understand Gaudreau’s choice, he would hinted at being unhappy there despite being part of the organization for 12 years.

“I think it was just time for me to make a little bit of a change. I’ll leave it at that,” Gaudreau said.

"Our decision was it was best for us not to go back to Calgary and then we decided to figure out what was the best option for us and Columbus was right up on top of the list."

CBC Calgary news anchor Andrew Brown sent a message to Gaudreau when closing the broadcast and it’s hilarious:

Wow! Taking a shot at the former Flames star on live TV. We bet the Flames’ fanbase is loving it.
