Caps goalie Logan Thompson addresses the guy who threw nachos during Corey Perry’s goal!
The netminder saw him throw the food on the ice and now has this to tell him:
On Tuesday night, while the Edmonton Oilers were working to tie things up against the Washington Capitals, a plate of nachos landed on the ice as veteran forward Corey Perry actually had to avoid them in order to bury the one-timer past goalie Logan Thompson.
After the game, which the Caps still ended up winning 3-2, everyone was talking about the nachos’ assist, including Thompson, who saw the whole bizarre sequence unfold before him. Crediting the fan with an assist for the Oilers’ second goal, Thompson said, via the Guardian:
“I saw the guy that threw them. Wasn’t too happy. But credit to him. He got them a goal.”
While you could tell he wanted to blame the fan for the distraction, Thompson mentioned how he needed to remain focused and should have made the stop anyway, though he still protested to the officials on the play.
“I’ve never seen that before. Obviously, I’ve got to play to the whistle. That one’s on me,” said Thompson, who made 30 saves in his team’s victory.
Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery even wondered if he could challenge the goal as the nachos caused some debate:
“I didn’t even notice them, and then guys were yelling, ‘There’s nachos on the ice!’. I was like, ‘I don’t know, can we challenge that?’”
There is an indication in the rule book that could have supported Carbery and Thompson’s complaints. Rule 63.5 states that: “In the event that objects are thrown on the ice that interfere with the progress of the game, the referee shall blow the whistle and stop the play and the puck shall be faced-off at a face-off spot in the zone nearest to the spot where play is stopped.”
Perhaps the nachos’ assist is now easier to swallow that Thompson and the Capitals still got away with the 3-2 win in Edmonton.
