It’s the time of the year where teams are fighting hard for a playoff spot in a tight race both in the Eastern and Western Conferences. The Vancouver Canucks are certainly feeling the heat and a day after a heartbreaking loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night, an incident took place at practice on Thursday that proved how frustration has emerged in the dressing room. In the middle of a small area game at the end of a long practice, teammates Filip Hronek and Conor Garland briefly came to blows and had to be separated by veteran blue liner Ian Cole.
While the gloves never came off and the fight did not last long, it was clear that both players were heated during the exchange.
It had already been a tough day for Garland who, during a rush drill earlier during practice, got tangled up with defenseman Nikita Zadorov and took a high stick to the face.
Neither Garland or Hronek met with the media following practice, but fans do hope that the passion will still be high and boiling when the Canucks take on the Washington Capitals in Vancouver on Saturday night.
This is what the projected lineup looked like during drills on that heated practice session:
Mikheyev-Miller-Boeser
Suter-EP40-Höglander
Podkolzin-Lindholm-Garland
PDG-Blueger-Lafferty
Aman
Hughes-Hronek
Soucy-Myers
Cole-Zadorov
Friedman-Juulsen
It was quite an eventful day for all Canucks, not only because of the altercation between Garland and Hronek, but also because, before practice started, the players and coaches assembled for a post trade deadline team photo.
This is the second time this week teammates have come to blows. On Wednesday, Detroit Red Wings’ Ben Chiarot and Lucas Raymond got into at practice and had to be broken up during a drill.
