Canadiens sign Monahan to a killer contract

What a steal! Great signing by the Habs.

The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed veteran forward Sean Monahan to a one year contract worth $1.985 million.

The 28 year old forward was coming off a deal that paid him a whopping $6.375 million, but had been underperforming for years. He was acquired by the Habs from the Calgary Flames as essentially a salary dump but has fit in well with the Canadiens so far. He put up a very respectable six goals and 17 points in 25 games with the Habs this past season and showed that he still has more to give at the NHL level.

In particular, he seems to have found some chemistry with young Canadiens forward Kirby Dach. Interestingly enough, Monahan was one of Dach's favourite players when Dach was growing up as a Flames fan in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. Now, the pair are linemates and are producing together on the Habs.

Life can be stranger than fiction sometimes.

Personally, I love this deal for both sides. Monahan put up 30+ goals and 80+ points during his prime with the Flames, playing mostly alongside superstar winger Johnny Gaudreau. Injury issues and inconsistency though pushed Monahan down the lineup though, to the point where he was shipped off to Montreal along with a 1st round pick for literally nothing... just future considerations.

Armed now with a one year contract that pays him appropriately, Monahan has something to prove. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a resurgent season in Montreal in 2023-24. He has proven that he has the skill and the tenacity to produce, now it's just a matter of his body holding up over the long haul of an 82 game NHL season. Frankly, I'm pulling for the guy. He was essentially given up on by the Flames, their coaching staff and Hell even their fanbase. I love a good comeback story, so I'm pulling for Monahan to figure it all out this season and to get back to being the impact player that he can be.

Great signing for Montreal. Great signing for Monahan. Let's go, Mony!
