The hockey fanbase in and near Montreal is extremely passionate, especially when it comes to the Canadiens and the few possibilities of meeting the players. Over the weekend, rookie Joshua Roy was the special guest at at Universe Collectibles in Vaudreuil, Quebec, where he was set to meet with fans and sign some autographs. About 60 fans, with several young ones, showed up looking to meet the 21-year-old forward who had just been sent down to the Laval Rocket, the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate. However, they ended up waiting for more than three hours before they were informed that Roy was not going to show up.

Fans were extremely disappointed as some made the drive to see him, bringing merchandise or memorabilia that they had hoped he would sign. It was later explained through his agent that Roy was never informed of the date and time of the event, though no official comments or statement were made on what really happened.

“Joshua Roy wasn’t told the date of the meet & greet autograph event” that he didn’t show up to yesterday, according to his agent.

People who were there were reimbursed.

With the news spreading like wild fire on social media, some fans came to the defense of Roy, saying that hockey players are often busy and that it was most likely a situation beyond his control with representatives usually in charge of their clients’ schedule. The backlash on social media eventually prompted Roy’s agency to say something as his agent Olivier Fortier finally made a public statement during an appearance on BPM Sports Radio.

Fortier explained that there were mitigating circumstances, outside of Roy’s control, though not much more was said about what truly caused his client’s absence and the frustration and disappointment it caused.

Roy, who put up nine points in 23 games with the Habs last season, is said to be determined to make it up to his fans, though we yet know what that will be. Or when.
