Canada's Andrew Gibson receives death threats after quarter-final loss at WJC

Disgraceful behaviour. Can the frustrated Canadian hockey fans out there calm down!

Chris Gosselin

For the first time in the history of the World Juniors, Canada has failed to advance beyond the quarter-final round for consecutive seasons. And some people only have one person to blame for it, defenseman Andrew Gibson.

Adam Jecho scored the game-winner on the power play with 40 seconds remaining in the third period while Gibson was in the penalty box for kneeing with just over two minutes to go.

Since the end of Team Canada’s run on Thursday night, Gibson’s name has been trending on social media, and unfortunately for the blue liner, some fans are being insensitive and ruthless when it comes to the penalty he took. Amongst the harsh criticism, some fans are crossing a line, posting death threats to Gibson, having me wondering if the poor guy will get some attacks on his personal accounts. One idiot asked “why did Johnny Gaudreau have to leave this world when Andrew Gibson was right there?” He eventually removed his post since people were furious with his comments, but others piled on nonetheless.

Do I have to remind anyone that these are kids? I mean an undisciplined bunch, sure, there is no doubt that Canada’s self-inflicted mistakes led to goals throughtout the entire tournament, and so Gibson cannot take the full blame here.

Canada’s lack of discipline also played a part in the quarter-final games as it did the entire tournament. Now USA will face a Czechia squad that eliminated Canada and let’s hope that the team has learned a valuable lesson, while the mean and idiotic fans will learn to stop blaming a 19-year-old kid for missing out on the podium.
