The Detroit Red Wings have created a scenario where they will have a number of experienced National Hockey League goaltenders competing for the starting job come training camp, with Alex Lyons, Ville Husso and now veteran NHL goaltender Cam Talbot all under contract for next season.

That scenario has not only left general manager Steve Yzerman and head coach Derek Lalonde with a number of options available to them should things go wrong for any reason during the course of the season, but it may have also been one of the reasons that Talbot was attracted to Detroit in the first place.

After a disaster season as a member of the Ottawa Senators, Talbot had a big bounce back as a member of the Los Angeles Kings last year, earning himself an All-Star nod in the process. In a recent interview with Helen St. James of the Detroit Free Press, Talbot revealed that the kind of competition he found in Los Angeles helped fuel his bounce back season.

"They had a guy there that had played a bunch the year before. Then they signed myself and David Rittich and it was a healthy competition to start the season," said Talbot as per the Detroit Free Press. "I thought I started the season really strong."

Despite being in the latter stages of his NHL career, Talbot made it clear that he doesn't intend to make it easy for Husso or Lyons to get starts in goal this coming season.

"I’m at the stage of my career where I’m not ready to just mail it in yet," admitted Talbot. "I don’t want to give up starts. I still want to compete for starts and I still want to compete for the playoffs and I still want to win a Stanley Cup. I’ve never done that yet."

Although the competition is no doubt what drives him as a professional athlete, Talbot revealed that there was another big reason that he signed with the Red Wings. Talbot has jumped around from team to team throughout his NHL career, and he revealed that the Red Wings offered him the kind of stability that he felt he owed to his family.

"Taking the kids out of schools and moving them all the time and having to leave their friends, that’s the hardest part for me," admitted Talbot. "A hockey team, you can plug in and play. Guys always integrate you into the team. But it’s the family factor at this point, which for me getting the second year on this deal was huge."

Now it is up to Talbot to prove that the Red Wings made the right choice.
