There's nothing better than seeing a budding rivalry between two young stars you know are going to be in the National Hockey League for a very long time, and last week we may have gotten a little bit of a look into one of those rivalries when Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar threw out something of an uncharacteristic chirp at a rival player.
Makar and the defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Colorado Avalanche, took on the New York Rangers this past Friday night in what would prove to be a 2-1 loss for the Avs. One of the big highlights that emerged from that game was a particularly flashy save made by Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin, one in which he shut the door on Makar by flashing his glove and catching the puck firmly in his glove hand.
While it was what you would consider a pretty routine save, it would seem that it may have irked Makar a little bit because of the showboating nature of the Rangers' goaltender. When asked about the save following the conclusion of the game, Makar tossed out a little bit of a chirp at Shesterkin when he claimed that the Rangers star goaltender was a bit of a show off.
"Their goalie is all about the show," said Makar. "It went straight in his glove.... nice little windmill there."
"I just walked over to the slot and made a good shot."
Given that both men are blossoming into legitimate superstars for each of their respective franchises a rivalry between these two would be nothing short of excellent. The only unfortunate detail here is that Shesterkin and Makar won't cross paths again in the regular season, so the only way we will get to see these two clash again this season is if both the Avalanche and the Rangers make a deep playoff run.
