It appears that defenseman Jakob Chychrun isn’t as thrilled anymore about playing for his hometown Ottawa Senators. So much so that Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia reports that general manager Steve Staios is considering trade options.

“He’s not really in any hurry to do anything and he doesn’t have to be,” a league executive told Postmedia. “I just think they’re trying to get a feel for what they can get for certain players plus help the group.”

Garrioch adds that sources have informed him that Staios has been listening to interested team for the services of 25-year-old blue liner. He hints at the Edmonton Oilers, who have been looking to bolster their back end.

Chychrun was traded to Ottawa less than a year ago, on March 1, 2023, and could be on the move again at this year’s deadline. He however has one more year left on his contract and owns a 10-team no-trade list, there’re holding some power on where he could land. The defenseman is eligible to sign an extension starting July 1, but it is believed that he is questioning his desire to sign in Ottawa long-term.

It is reported that Staios is likely to meet with Chychrun’s Ottawa-based agent, Andy Scott of Octagon Hockey, to see what his client seeks for the future. Trade chatter could definitely pick up then, especially as we get closer to the deadline on March 8.

It was a great story when first reported that Chychrun was coming home however it sounds like it’ll be short-lived.

“If the Senators and Chychrun aren’t on the same page, then you can expect the trade talk around the 25-year-old will intensify. He will have some control over the situation with a 10-team “no move” clause in his contract, but if a contender wants him, that’s an attractive option.”
