Longtime Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster Bob Cole will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television this Sunday at the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards.
The award is to recognize "an exceptional lifetime of work that has had a profound impact on the media industry at home or abroad."
Obviously, this is a well earned honor. Cole was the voice of multiple generations and is perhaps the most accomplished hockey broadcaster in the history of the sport. But, like always, Cole is humble even despite his accomplishments.
"I was absolutely floored. I couldn't believe it, really," he said in an interview with CBC from his home in St. John's, Newfoundland.
"There's lots of people that can be recognized for this. But I guess they have a committee and they chose me," he added with a chuckle. "I'm very grateful and humbled, of course. My family's pretty proud, I think."
Cole has been retired since 2019, but first started calling games for CBC way, way, waaaay back in 1969. As someone who came of age in the 1980s and 1990s myself, Cole is THE voice of hockey for me and many others of my generation.
I mean... how can you not love this guy?
