Arber Xhekaj injured after scrap with Vincent Desharnais.
Xhekaj looks hurt.
The Montreal Canadiens may have just lost one of their more impactful players, and quite frankly one of the most entertaining parts of the product they have put on the ice this season.
On Saturday, during an afternoon game between the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens, Canadiens defenseman Arber Xhekaj appeared to suffer a significant shoulder injury during what was a wild few moments midway through the second period.
The whole thing appeared to flare up when Xhekaj and Oilers forward Evander Kane were battling for position in front of the net, with both men exchanging cross-checks to one another back and forth. This would eventually lead to a bigger melee between the two teams which in turn resulted in a few players squaring off, including Xhekaj and Oilers defenseman Vincent Desharnais who was actually having his first career fight in the National Hockey League.
At some point during that fight Xhekaj appears to have really hurt his shoulder, because he came up from the fight with his right arm hanging completely limp at his side. Thanks to this terrific video captured by Marc-André Perreault of TVA Sports, we can even see Xhekaj point to his shoulder as heads back into the Canadiens locker room, clearly indicating the source of the injury.
Some have pointed to this particular punch from Xhekaj as the source of the damage, but that remains only speculation at this time.
