It hasn't been the kind of season that goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic was envisioning coming into his season year with the Detroit Red Wings.
After struggling in his appearances in the Detroit crease, Nedeljkovic was sent down to their American Hockey League affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins for what was described as a "conditioning" assignment. Meanwhile, the Red Wings have been rolling with journeyman Magnus Hellberg at the backup position for the last several months.
For Nedeljkovic, it's been a struggle for most of the season with a goals against average of over four and a sub .900 save percentage. However, he's been working on getting his game back in order in the American Hockey League - and he nearly became the second AHL goaltender in less than a month's time to score a goal!
Late in Grand Rapids' recent game against the Chicago Wolves, Nedeljkovic launched the puck towards the open Chicago net, only to miss it by just a few feet. He would be credited with the assist soon after a teammate deposited the puck into the open cage:
