AHL introduces new equipment safety mandates

The sports community was shocked and deeply saddened following the untimely passing of former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Adam Johnson last year. His tragic demise occurred following a devastating incident on the ice during a game in the Elite Ice Hockey League in late October. 

Johnson sustained fatal injuries when accidentally struck by a falling opponent, causing severe damage to his neck that tragically proved too severe. Shortly afterward, several NHL players began wearing additional neck protection, while mandates were introduced in other hockey leagues so as to avoid a repeat incident. 

And now, the American Hockey League is doing so. Following a unanimous approval by the Board of Governors, the AHL is now mandating all players to wear neck protection in addition to cut resistant socks and wrist guards:
