17-year-old Justin Blais convulses on the ice after hitting his head and is stretchered out
What a terribly scary incident in the QMJHL on Friday night. Get more details below:
This is something no one wants to see in a hockey game. On Friday night in a game between the Gatineau Olympiques and the Baie-Comeau Drakkar of Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, 17-year-old defenseman Justin Blais left the ice on a stretcher after he fell and hit his head.
The incident took place as rival players were in a scrum, which led to Blais apparently losing his balance and falling. He then hit his head on the ice and went into convulsions.
According to hockey reporter Mikael Lalancette, Blais was placed on the stretcher, but did regain consciousness as he was headed out.
The game ends abruptly due to the incident that led to Blais’ severe injury. The Drakkar had the 8-2 lead at the time the contest was stopped.
The Olympiques announced that Blais was taken to a local Hospital to undergo further testings. He is alert and responsive. So good news at least.
The team is likely to provide an update on Blais’ condition in the coming days.
Our thoughts go out to him.
