Report: P.K. Subban to the Leafs?

Subban makes a surprising admission about his future in the NHL.

Reporters speculate and share information as they receive it pertaining to the futures of certain National Hockey League players, making assertions or assumptions that a given hockey player will end up traded or signed to another team in the near future.

It's are you hear such things uttered from the actual player. Especially not a player who has the spotlight on them wherever he goes.

P.K. Subban revealed to Sportsnet's Shawn McKenzie that he hopes to eventually play for the Toronto Maple Leafs at some point in his career.

He was not prompted in any way. McKenzie did not egg him on by saying something like, "do you see yourself in a Leafs jersey down the road?" with P.K. grinning and saying "you never know what can happen in your career", winking, and skating away.

That would just be classic P.K., stirring up the media.

He just casually dropped this bomb on his own accord, and sounded completely serious about it.

Now - does this ever actually happen? No one could say for sure. Subban's contract with the Nashville Predators runs for another 4 years after 2017-18, with an annual average cap hit of $9 million. We've spoken a lot about how Erik Karlsson and Drew Doughty should be top targets for the Leafs this summer or the next, but what about Subban?

In a couple years, the Predators will have to pay up for Ryan Ellis and then Roman Josi, with Kevin Fiala also deserving a pay day in the near future. GM David Poile isn't in serious trouble now, but the Subban contract could get moved in a couple years. By then the Leafs may have their solution on the blue line and won't have the space for his monster contract.

If that's the case, could he come to Toronto as a free agent down the line? The answer is absolutely yes. He won't be making $9 million on his next deal. If Toronto wants him, he would love to come home.

He said it himself.
